The Volkswagen Beetle coupe was the main body style variant of the Volkswagen Beetle Type 1, introduced in 1938. The Beetle had a rear-mounted, air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine offered in a fair range of displacements starting with the 1.1L producing 25hp all the way to a 1.6L delivering 50hp to the rear-wheels. The Beetle was also available in a convertible body style. The Beetle had a significant update in 1971 and an alternative model series known as the Super Beetle was also offered until 1979 when the Super Beetle was discontinued while production of the Beetle kept going until 2003 when it was discontinued. The Volkswagen Beetle was re-introduced in 1998 as the New Beetle.
