The third generation Subaru Impreza WRX was introduced for the 2008 model year. Initially, the third generation of WRX as only offered as a five door hatchback, but starting in the 2009 model year, a sedan option was available. The WRX was fitted with a turbocharged 2.5L flat four engine, and was the basis for the high performance Impreza WRX STi variant. The third generation of Impreza WRX saw the model begin to be known simply as the WRX, and when production ended in 2014, Subaru turned the Impreza's performance variants into their own model, the Subaru WRX.
