The Porsche 911 G-Body generation lasted, from 1974 to 1989, taking the place of the first 911s referred to as the F-Body cars. This generation of 911 saw many changes during its tenure. Most notable was the introduction of the controversial "impact bumpers," thanks to U.S. crash safety regulations. Also new was the initiation of the "whale tail" spoiler, first seen on the 1974 911 Carrera RS 3.0L. By 1978 the bodies got a little brawnier in the rear quarters, complemented by larger engine sizes. Throughout its tenure, the G-Body offered 2.7L, 3.0L, and 3.2L engines, and all mated to a 915 gearbox, or the G50, from 1987 to 1989. Variants produced include the base 912E, 911, 911S, 911 Carrera 3.0L, 911SC, and Carrera. 1975 saw one of the most significant changes for Porsche: the turbo model. The 911 Turbo or 930 featured a 3.0L with 260hp and a unique four-speed transmission. By 1982 the company introduced a convertible and resurrected the "speedster" name in 1989, just as the 964 generation succeeded the G-Body.
