The Pontiac GTO first appeared as a performance options package for the Pontiac LeMans in 1964. In 1966, the GTO became its own model, and is widely credited as being one of the first muscle cars. The first generation of GTO ran from 1964 until 1967, after which the Second Generation Pontiac GTO was introduced.
