The Pontiac Firebird was built as an F-body car and was a sibling of GM's Camaro sports coupe. The Firebird was a 'pony car,' which meant its competitor was the Ford Mustang, among others. It was offered with various straight-six and V8 engines and several 2 to 4-speed automatic and manual transmissions. Also offered to customers was the convertible roof, which GM made far fewer of than the coupe.
