The second generation of Pontiac Chieftain was introduced for the 1955 model year. The second generation Chieftain featured an all new body, chassis, and engine. The second gen Chieftain was the first Pontiac model to be offered with a V8 engine, and was built in a variety of body styles. Notable trim levels for the second generation Chieftain included the Super Chief and the Catalina. The second generation Chieftain was in production until 1957 and was replaced by the Third Generation Pontiac Chieftain.
