The second generation Plymouth Road Runner was introduced for the 1971 model year. The second generation Road Runner was available as a two door coupe, and was fitted with a range of V8 engines including a 7.0L Hemi V8. Due to the discontinuation of the Plymouth GTX as a model, the GTX name became a trim level for the second generation Road Runner until 1974. The second generation Road Runner was in production until 1974 and was replaced by the Third Generation Plymouth Road Runner.
