Nissan's D21 series was the successor to the Datsun 720. They were called Nissan Datsun Truck for the Japanese market and Nissan Hardbody in the United States. "Hardbody" refers to the truck's double-wall bed and overall styling. Although available with multiple engine variants around the world, in the US the most common versions were the 2.4L I4 (KA24) and 3.0L V6 (VG30E) in both manual and automatic, with either four wheel drive or rear wheel drive only. Compared to the 720, the Hardbody had two large headlights rather than four smaller lights, and a less boxy, more aggressive appearance. The Hardbody was produced for the US market from November 1985 until 1997 and was replaced by the Nissan Frontier.
