The Mark I Mini was introduced in 1957. The Mk I was the first version of what would become one of the most iconic cars of all time: the Classic Mini. The Mark I was created under the stewardship of the British Motor Corporation, who sold the Mini under Austin and Morris brands. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, the Mini was a revolution in car production, featuring a laterally mounted engine and wheels mounted in the corners in order to maximize passenger space. Having the wheels mounted so closely to the corners gave the car great maneuverability. Legendary race car designer John Cooper of the Cooper Car Company saw the racing potential of the Mini and created the revered Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S. While the saloon body is the most commonly known, the Mk I was also offered as an estate, van, or truck. A wide range of compact inline four engines were fitted to the Mk I Mini, with all variants featuring front wheel drive. One of the most notable Mk I cars was the Mini Beach Car, an extremely rare doorless variant echoing the styling of cars such as the Fiat 600 Jolly.
