For the 2005 model year, Mercedes-Benz introduced an updated SLK with the second generation R171. For this new version of the roadster, the inline-4 and V6 engine were joined in the range by a V8, which was available in the AMG variant. The R171 featured variants such as the SLK 200 Kompressor, SLK280, SLK300, SLK350, and the SLK55 AMG. Available until 2011, the second generation SLK was replaced by the R172.
