The first variant of the Mercedes-Benz W111 Coupe to be introduced was the 220SE. Debuting in 1961, the 220 SE coupe was powered by Mercedes' M127.984 engine. This 2.2L inline six powerplant generated 118hp that was sent to the rear wheels via a standard 4 speed manual transmission, although a 4 speed automatic was optional. Production of the W111 220SE Coupe lasted until late 1965, with a total of 14,173 examples built. The 220SE coupe was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz 250SE Coupe.
