In 1990, Mercedes-Benz introduced the second generation of their G-Class SUV. Known internally as the W463, the second generation G-Wagen featured an updated chassis, as well as a largely upgraded interior as compared to the previous W460 models. A fleet version known as the W461 was also built, featuring a W460 body with a W463 chassis. In late 1993, Mercedes-Benz changed their naming system, moving the model letter before the engine displacement numbers, so the 500G became G500. The W463 G-Class went through numerous updates over the course of its life, improving quality and performance. Due to these improvements, the G-Class went from a peripheral model to a highly desirable, high selling luxury SUV. Variants produced for this generation include the 200GE, 230GE/G230, 250GD, 300GE/G300, 300GD/G300D, 300GD/G300D Cabriolet, 350GD T/G350 Turbodiesel, G350 CDI, 500GE, G270 CDI, G300 Turbodiesel, G320, G350D, G350 CDI BlueTEC, G400 CDI, G320 CDI Cabriolet, G500, G500 Cabriolet, G550, G36 AMG, G55 AMG, G63 AMG, G65 AMG, G63 AMG 6x6, G500/G550 4x4², and G650 Landaulet. Mercedes didn't officially import the G-Class until 2002, so a small company called Europa imported a range of G-Class offerings, and converted them to the required US-spec. These cars are often designated with the Europa name. The third-generation of the G-Wagen, known as the W463 Post-Facelift, became available for the 2019 model year. In certain markets, such as Austria and Switzerland, the Mercedes-Benz G was sold under the Puch brand.
