The second generation of Mercedes-Benz CLK, known as the W209, was introduced for the 2003 model year. Although previous generation (W208) convertibles remained in production until end of 2003, the second generation W209 came onto the market in 2003. This second generation was slightly larger than its predecessor, and was offered in both convertible and coupe body styles. A range of variants were made, including the CLK200 Kompressor, CLK220 CDI, CLK240, CLK270 CDI, CLK280, CLK320, CLK320 CDI, CLK500, and CLK55 AMG. For 2006, Mercedes gave the CLK a facelift and a new range of engines, resulting in new variants: CLK350, CLK550, and CLK63 AMG. A hardcore performance version, known as the CLK63 AMG Black Series, was also built, but the most notable version was the CLK DTM, a special limited edition variant made to celebrate Mercedes' championship victory in DTM (German Touring Cars). Production of the Mercedes-Benz CLK ended in 2009, although a few examples are known to have been sold for the 2010 model year.
