The second generation of Land Rover Defender, known as the Defender 316 replaced the Land Rover Ninety and Land Rover One Ten, the work-horse platform from Land Rover that replaced the Land Rover Series earlier in 1983. The Defender 316 generation appeared in 1990 after Land Rover decided to name its work-horse line of vehicles due to the upcoming launch of the Land Rover Discovery. As with the previous generation, the Defender 316 was offered in 3 wheelbase options -90, 110 and 130- and a handful of body style configurations: Wagon, Single cab Pickup, Double Cab Pickup, Soft Top and Hard Top (similar to Panel Van). This new generation also featured a new line-up of powertrain configurations, which evolved in the 16 years it was offered. Amongst these were Rover V8's, the renowed 200 and 300 TDi's, Jaguar supercharged V8's and even BMW sourced 2.8 in-line 6, all of them combined with 4 and 5 speed manual and automatic transmissions. Produced until 2016, the Defender L316 virtually remained unchanged from its introduction despite a few updates to comply with regulations all over the world. For the 2020 model year, Land Rover introduced the L663 Generation Defender.
