The 2007 to 2009 Saleen S281 was a series of conversions based on the Fifth Generation Ford Mustang that featured a 281ci performance engine, upgraded suspension components, and unique exterior and interior styling. Multiple trims were offered including the S281-3V (Base), S281 SC (Supercharged), S281E (Extreme), H281 (Heritage, Naturally Aspirated), H281DG (Dan Gurney, Supercharged), and Racecraft 420-S, among others. The coupe or convertible bodies featured aero bumpers, HID headlights, grills, hoods, and spoilers. The interior commonly featured multi-colored upholstery and unique trim treatments. Different styles of suspension components were used to improve on the Fifth Generation Mustang the vehicles were based on. The 4.6L Ford V8 tuned by Saleen engine featured modified internals and an optional supercharger depending on the trim type. Power was sent to the rear wheels via a five or six speed manual or four or five speed automatic transmission with a limited-slip rear differential. 4,072 S281 were produced, and the S281 was succeeded by the 2010 facelift Saleen Mustang S281 II.
