The 2008/09 Mustang Bullitt was Ford's follow-up to the 2001 "New Edge" 4th Gen Mustang Bullitt. Based on the retro-styled S-197 I Mustang, it paid homage to the First Generation Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in the 1968 movie Bullitt. The 08/09 Bullitt was more than an appearance package and saw an influence from Ford Performance, costing $3,310 more than a stock GT Premium coupe. The Bullitt coupe was finished in either Highland Green or black, with the exterior featuring a unique grille insert with chrome bezel, and 3.5-inch stainless steel exhaust tips. An upgraded suspension  included unique shock and strut tuning, a front strut tower brace, and lowered ride height via springs. Each 5th-Gen Bullitt was assigned its own VIN-specific serial number on a unique ID plate on the strut tower brace. Interior features included Bullitt-specific metallic interior trim with badging, revised seats and steering wheel, gauge cluster, and an aluminum shift knob. The 4.6L V-8 had 315 hp when new thanks to a Bullitt branded cold-air-intake, revised engine calibration and throttle response, and a revised exhaust system with a Bullit-inspired tone. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and standard 3.73:1 rear gearing. A total of 6,582 were produced, yet the Bullitt name would return for the Sixth Generation as the 2019-2020 Bullitt Mustang.
