The third generation of Ford Mustang was introduced for the 1979 model year. The third generation Mustang was built using Ford's Fox platform, leading to it being known as the "Fox Body" Mustang. The Mustang convertible saw its return in the third generation, alongside the hardtop and coupe/liftback versions. Production of the "Fox Body" Mustang was split into two distinct evolutions, 1979-1986 (Commonly referred to as "Quad-Headlight) and 1987-1993 (Commonly referred to as "Aero" or "Aeronose"). A wide range of trims and variants were available, with the most notable ones being the SVO, SVT Cobra, and race-focused SVT Cobra R. Automatic and manual transmissions were offered for a range of inline-four, V6, and V8 engines. Production of the third generation Mustang lasted until 1993, when the Fourth Generation Ford Mustang replaced it.
