The Ford Mustang SVT Cobra was a high performance variant of the 1987-1993 Third Generation Ford Mustang. The SVT Cobra was the first vehicle developed by Ford's new performance division, SVT (Special Vehicle Team). These performance-focused Mustangs were only available in the Hatchback body style (a/k/a fastback), and were painted in Vibrant Red, Teal Metallic, or Black. In addition to upgrades to the suspension, transmission, and brakes, the SVT Cobra was fitted with a powerful 235hp 5.0L V8 engine that sent drive to the rear wheels through a 5 speed manual gearbox. A total of 4,993 examples of the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra were built, all of them for the 1993 model year. Ford also built a race-focused version of the SVT Cobra that was known as the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R.
