In 1973, Ferrari introduced the Dino 308 GT4, which was intended to replace the Dino 246 GT and GTS models. Despite being its replacement, the 308 was different in many ways to the 246 GT. The 308 was equipped with a transversely placed 2.9 liter V8 engine (often refered to as a 3.0L V8 given its displacement of 2926.90 cc's) in the middle rear of the car, yet it still managed to have enough space for a 2+2 seating configuration. It featured a 5-speed manual gearbox that delivered power to the rear wheels. A version of the car was built in 1975 for the Italian market that included a de-tuned version of the V8 (2.0L). The car was badged the 208 GT4 and, although designed with less power, was more affordable. In all, over 3500 examples of the 308 and the 208 combined were manufactured. Production ended for both cars in 1980, and the Mondial succeeded them.
