The first generation of Dodge Viper was introduced for the 1992 model year. The first generation of Viper is known as the SR I, and saw the new model offered exclusively in an open top roadster body style known as the RT/10. The Viper was concieved as a focused performance car, and as such, it lacked many comforts expected from cars in this price range. Among the notable exclusions were exterior door handles, airbags, and air conditioning. Other spartan features included zippable vinyl windows and a simple canvas soft top, although a removable hardtop was later added as an option. The most notable aspect of the Viper was its engine. The new 8.0L V10 engine was developed in collaboration with Lamborghini, and featured an all aluminum block, and developed 400hp. Just under 6,000 examples of the first generation Viper were built before the introduction of the Second Generation Dodge Viper (SR II).
