Dodge introduced the third generation of Dart for the 1963 model year. The third generation of Dart saw the model become a compact offering, replacing the Dodge Lancer. Although the Dart shifted to a compact model, sedan, wagon, hardtop, and convertible body styles were still available. A choice of three engines selections were fitted, with two Slant Six (2.8L, 3.7L) and one V8 (4.5L) options. Production of the third generation lasted until 1966, and the model was replaced by the Fourth Generation Dodge Dart.
