The second evolution of the C1 Chevrolet Corvette debuted for 1956. This updated version of the Corvette featured much more pronounced single headlights, and the sculpted "coves" down the side of the car which would become a signature for the rest of C1 production. In addition to the stylistic updates, the 235 cubic inch inline six was replaced by the 265 cubic inch V8, which was the only engine offered for 1956, albeit in a few states of tune. For 1957, a 283 cubic inch V8 replaced the 265ci unit, with power ranging from 220hp to 283hp. Both carbureted and fuel-injected versions of the 283ci were sold. A two speed automatic transmission was optional alongside a 3 speed manual (4 speed manual was available in late 1957). A total of 9,806 examples of the 1956-1957 C1 Corvette were built before it was replaced by the 1958-1960 C1 Chevrolet Corvette.
