The Chevrolet Camaro SS returned for the 2010 model year as part of the 5th Gen Camaro. Having been out of production since 2002, the Camaro SS was reintroduced in order to compete with the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. For the first time since 70’s, Chevrolet produced the SS in house. Originally debuting as a coupe, the SS saw a convertible version introduced for 2011. Two main trim packages were offered, the 1SS and the 2SS. The 1SS package provided an aluminum 6.2L V8 with oil cooler and a choice of a 6 speed automatic or 6 speed T56 manual transmission with 4 piston Brembo disc brakes on all four wheels as well as a limited slip differential and front and rear spoilers. The 2SS package included everything in the 1SS package, with added convenience items such as console gauges (reminiscent of the 1st Gen Camaro SS), leather seats, and LED ambient lighting. Examples of the SS that were fitted with the automatic transmission received the L99 V8 engine (w/ active fuel management) rated at 400hp, while the 6 speed manual SS cars received the LS3 V8 engine rated at 426hp. In 2013 the 1LE handling option was avaiable on manual 6 speed cars only, and included many of the suspension components fitted to the ZL1. Production of the 5th Gen Camaro SS lasted until 2015.
