Chevrolet was not the first manufacturer to produce a “Pony car”, but after witnessing the early success of the Ford Mustang and realizing the appeal, Chevrolet developed a pony car of their own that was ready to put everyone on notice. The 1967 Camaro, introduced in mid 66, was an equal match for the Mustang in base trim, but it was the option of the Super Sport package (SS) that ignited the ‘Pony car wars’ of the 60’s. With the unibody Camaro, Chevrolet could now offer the potent 350ci V8 as a starting point for the SS, but also offer the big block 396ci V8 with a range of horsepower options including the L78 375hp, or even the 396 L89 which included aluminum heads. The Camaro SS also allowed for many other options to personalize your muscle car. You could order the Rally Sport (RS) package with hideaway headlights, air conditioning, an automatic transmission, a manual 3 speed, or a manual 4 speed transmission. The possibilities were endless, and many buyers loaded their cars up with their favorite options. The 1st Gen Camaro SS, which took the Camaro from pony car to muscle car, was built until 1969, but was replaced by the 2nd Gen Chevrolet Camaro SS.
