BMW introduced their E34 5 Series based M5 in 1989. The E34 M5 was powered by BMW's S38 3.5L inline 6 engine, but starting in 1992, European models received a larger, more powerful version of the S38. The E34 M5 was also the first generation of M5 to feature a station wagon (Touring) variant, offered alongside the Sedan. In 1993, non-European markets stopped receiving the M5, but in Europe, the M5 was offered until 1995. At the end of its production, the E34 M5 was replaced by the E39 M5 starting in 1999.
