The first generation of Audi R8 was known as the Type 42. Introduced for the 2007 model year, the Type 42 was based on the Lamborghini Gallardo. As both Audi and Lamborghini are owned by Volkswagen Group, the R8 was developed using many components from the Gallardo in order to save costs. The Type 42 was available as a coupe or convertible, and was offered with a V8 (4.2L) or V10 (5.2L) engine driving all four wheels. Variants offered included the V8 Coupe, V8 Spyder, V10 Coupe, V10 Spyder, GT, GT Spyder, V10 Plus, and Competition. The Audi R8 Type 42 was in production until 2015 when it was replaced by the second generation Type 4S R8.
